finding a research lab

Finding and Contacting Researchers

  1. Begin by researching various faculty members and explore their lab websites.

  2. Examine their recent publications to familiarize yourself with their ongoing research. Determine whether their work aligns with your interests.

  3. Initiate contact with potential faculty members or principal investigators by expressing your interest in their research and requesting an opportunity to visit their lab or schedule a discussion to learn more.

  4. During the meeting or visit, inquire about potential openings in the lab and discuss the possibility of joining their research team.

  5. Be transparent about your intentions and make sure to convey whether you find the lab's focus compelling. This ensures that both you and the faculty member can make informed decisions about potential collaboration.

  6. If the meeting is positive and you're interested, inquire about the steps to formally join the lab.

  7. Join the lab and actively engage in the research activities by contributing to the ongoing projects and gaining valuable hands-on experience.

General Tips

  • Reach out to many researchers via email.

    • Keep in mind that professors and faculty are busy individuals who may not always respond promptly. Be persistent and follow up when necessary.

  • Inquire about current openings in labs; if none are available, express interest in potential future opportunities.

  • Maintain regular communication with the Principal Investigator (P.I) to demonstrate your ongoing interest and dedication to their research.

  • Consult with your professors; they can offer valuable guidance on finding research labs, help you build connections, or offer to have you join their lab.

  • Explore the CURO "Current Opportunities" page for current research openings.

  • Extend your reach beyond your department by contacting P.I's in other disciplines.

    • Many labs are interdisciplinary and welcome students from various majors.

  • During meetings with P.I's, ask relevant questions to gain insights into their research environment:

    • Inquire about the nature of typical undergraduate projects.

    • Clarify whether you would collaborate more with a graduate student or the P.I.

    • Discuss the possibility of contributing to research papers.

    • Ask if undergraduates are invited to group meetings.
